There is another inspirational song that I would like to mention is called “You Raise Me Up”. This song is created by Secret Garden, a duo. Secret Garden was formed in 1994 by Irish violinist Fionnuala Sherry and Norwegian composer-pianist Rolf Lovland. The first award that SG got is the Eurovision Song Contest in 1995 with “Nocturne”, an entry that was more an instrumental piece that a song. In the 40 years history of this prestigious pan-European television extravaganza, an instrumental piece had never previously won.
The song “You Raise Me Up” was written by Rolf Lovland in autumn 2000 and released in 2001. “Even if a majority of Secret Garden’s music is instrumental, I felt this melody was meant to be sung.” (Rolf, 2010). However, this song could barely be selected into Secret Garden’s new album in 2002. “Fionnuala and I strongly believed this song should be a part of the album and we didn’t compromise” (Rolf, 2010). This is Rolf’s song, so Rolf’s in charge. Obviously, he made a brilliant choice. At first, the song was called “Silence Story” instead of “You Raise Me Up”. Then Rolf changed the name of the song because he wrote the lyrics that suited for “You Raise Me Up”.
In fact, Secret Garden is a duo that they mainly just create melodies. They do not sing songs. Sometimes it is hard for them to find an excellent singer for their song. “You Raise Me Up” was sung by Brian Kennedy and the song has become a minor United Kingdom hit. Actually, Rolf was going to invite Johnny Logan to be the singer of this song, he thought that Johnny had the greatest voice he could hear. Nonetheless, Johnny Logan did not sing the song for some reason. So Brain became the very first singer of the song. Although this song did not published in United States, but “You Raise Me Up” has been used to memorial 911 event. So this song is doubtless an inspirational song.
Some people believes that “You Raise Me Up” is a song that talked about “love”. The lover raise “me” up. And the whole song is about a love story that talks about the lovers can hold each other’s hand and fight for their love. This can be one of the understanding of the song. However, in my opinion, the “You” in the lyrics means everyone. Everybody raises me up. On the other side, everyone raise everyone up. If we can’ stand together, we can stand on others shoulders and to be more than we can be. No matter which one is the real meaning of the song, it is still there.
Both “I Have a Dream” and “You Raise Me up” have been covered dozens of time, these two songs tell a very close implied meaning. In the meantime, Westlife, was an Irish Band that formed in July 1998 and disbanded in June 2012, covered both songs. And it was Westlife that made them much more popular than before. In 2005, Westlife even took the song “I Have a Dream” to 1st on the Top of the Pops and was the winner of the UK Record of the Year Award.
As everybody knows, “You Raise Me Up” is very popular right now. However, the sad thing is the song was not famous while it was first been published. “When we released it in 2001 there was no special attention to it.” Rolf said, Westlife save the song later. In the year of 2005, “You Raise Me Up” was jointly performed at the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize by Secret Garden and Westlife. So we can say that without Westlife, these two songs would not be famous as they are today.
